"Bringing Nephty on board is a blockbuster move," said Andrew Tamas, team Treasurer. "This signing should give returning players and new players confidence in our strategy moving forward."
Cruz, who has played competitive baseball for over 30 years, is eager to get to work with his new team. "Through my discussions with [General Manager] Glenn Carvajal and Andrew Tamas, I realized how serious they are about building a winning team. I’m looking forward to being a NY Hawk," said Cruz.
In terms of coaching style, Cruz intends to guide the team in much the same way that Joe Torre did when he started coaching the New York Yankees. "What Joe Torre did with the Yankees is similar to what I'm planning to do with the NY Hawks. I accepted the coaching job to share all I've learned with the team. We have a very productive year ahead.”
In addition to playing for the Phillies organization, Cruz has played alongside major leaguers like Manny Ramirez, Joe Perez and many youth talents from the tri-state area that have gone on to play at the major league or independent league level.
Throughout his career, Cruz has collected countless championships and league awards as a member of tri-state area teams like the Seminoles, White Sox, Outlaws, Aguilas, Rangers, Giants and Marauders to name a few. Additionally, he’s played in tournaments throughout the US and Caribbean Islands, and has consistently hit for average and power, repeatedly leading his team to championship play.
"Nephty was a key leader on the Rangers 2001 Fall Championship squad, and proceeded to become a perennial All-Star Selection each season," said Mi Moore, the Marauders’ manager.
As they begin training for the 2011 season, the NY Hawks will look to Cruz to help prepare them for the 20 game season."We're excited to have Nephty as our head coach," said General Manager Glenn Carvajal. "Nephty's experience and guidance will be a major asset to the team."
